(binhthuan.gov.vn) – On March 25, in Phan Thiết City, the provincial
Border Guard launched a peak campaign to carry out patrol and control duties
aimed at combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. This
campaign seeks to detect, prevent, and thoroughly handle violations related to IUU
fishing. At the same time, it aims to strengthen communication and advocacy to
raise awareness and compliance with legal regulations among fishermen during
their offshore fishing activities.

Accordingly, during this peak period, the provincial Border
Guard has organized three forces: patrol; inspection and control; and violation
handling teams. These units are tasked with patrolling, inspecting, and dealing
with IUU fishing violations committed by fishing vessels and fishermen in the
sea area from Phan Thiết Fishing Port to Phú Hải Port in Phan Thiết City. The
focus is on strictly handling violations such as illegal trawling in prohibited
zones; transporting, removing, or disabling Vessel Monitoring System (VMS)
devices; “three-no” fishing vessels (unregistered, uninspected, and
unlicensed); and vessels that do not meet the conditions for legal fishing
activities.

Immediately after deployment, the forces conducted multiple
rounds of inspections on vessels entering and exiting Phan Thiết Fishing Port.
As a result, several violations were detected and dealt with, including the
absence of captain certificates, failure to fly the national flag, and
registration numbers on vessels being faded or unreadable. In addition, the
units carried out communication efforts to inform and guide fishermen and
vessel owners on legal regulations related to IUU fishing, especially
emphasizing the importance of maintaining the VMS device and avoiding illegal
fishing in foreign waters.
