According to reports from local veterinary authorities in 2024, a total of 14
avian influenza (A/H5N1) outbreaks occurred in nine provinces and cities across
the country, affecting nearly 100,000 poultry, which were infected, died, or
were culled. This represents a 2.67-fold increase compared to the same period
in 2023. Notably, two outbreaks of A/H5N1 avian influenza were detected in
captive wild animals (tigers and leopards). Since the beginning of 2025, six
avian influenza (A/H5N1) outbreaks have been reported in four provinces: Tuyên
Quang, Nghệ An, Tiền Giang, and Long An, resulting in the infection, death, and
mandatory culling of more than 17,245 poultry, an increase of over six times
compared to the same period in 2024.
In humans, according to reports from local health authorities
in 2024, there was one confirmed case of A/H5N1 influenza infection that
resulted in death in Khánh Hòa province and one suspected case of A/H5
infection in Long An province. Additionally, one case of A/H9N2 avian influenza
was detected in Tiền Giang province, and one case of H1N1 swine flu was
reported in Sơn La province.
To proactively and effectively control avian influenza
outbreaks in poultry, especially to prevent human infections and fatalities due
to avian influenza in the province, the Chairman of the Provincial People's
Committee has issued a directive requiring relevant departments, agencies, and
local authorities to strengthen avian influenza prevention and control
measures.
Accordingly, the Chairman of the Provincial People's
Committee has directed the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to
take the lead, in coordination with relevant departments, agencies, and
district-level People's Committees, to review and allocate resources for the
strict and effective implementation of the Prime Minister's directives on the
national plan for avian influenza prevention and control for the 2019 - 2025
period. Additionally, they are to follow the directives of the Ministry of
Agriculture and Rural Development and the Provincial People's Committee in
implementing urgent and synchronized measures to prevent and control avian
influenza in animals.
Furthermore, the Chairman of the Provincial People's
Committee has directed the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to
coordinate with district-, town-, and city-level People's Committees to
establish task forces for inspecting and supervising avian influenza prevention
and control efforts, as well as developing disease-free farming facilities and
zones.
