Rising demand for rabies vaccination and antirabies serum

(binhthuan.gov.vn) Since
the beginning of 2025, Binh Thuan Province has recorded 5 deaths due to rabies
or suspected rabies. The disease has shown complex developments since 2024,
with an increasing trend in cases of people being attacked and injured by dogs
and cats.
At the provincial Center
for Disease Control’s vaccination site, more than 2,200 people have received
post-exposure prophylaxis using rabies vaccines or antirabies serum since the
start of the year. Notably, in the past two weeks alone, an average of 20 to 50
individuals per day have received such treatments. Among them, many were
children who had been scratched or bitten by their own household pets.
Medical experts
emphasize that rabies is one of the most dangerous infectious diseases, capable
of being transmitted from animals to humans and almost always fatal once
symptoms appear. Post-exposure prophylaxis using rabies vaccines and antirabies
serum remains the only effective method to protect those exposed. Experts also
advise not to squeeze blood from the wound, not to scrub or crush the bite
area, and not to cover the wound tightly, as these actions may accelerate the
virus's entry into the body./.
