Coastal erosion in Phan Thiet and Ham Thuan Nam due to the impact of storm No. 2

(binhthuan.gov.vn) The Standing Office of the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, Search and Rescue has just issued a quick report on the situation of coastal erosion in Phan Thiet city and Ham Thuan Nam district.

According to the Standing Office, in the last days of July 2023, the influence of storm No. 2 with strong winds and large waves on the sea of Binh Thuan, combined with continuous high tides caused erosion and loss of coastal land in Ham Tien ward, Phan Thiet city; collapsed inside the embankment of Ke Ga village, Tan Thanh commune, Ham Thuan Nam district.

Specifically, the embankment of Ke Ga village, Tan Thanh commune, Ham Thuan Nam district was washed away the sand inside with a length of about 3m, a width of 4m. The embankment is in danger of collapsing, endangering the travel of households living in the embankment area. The reason is that the sewer outlet of the road DT.719 and DT.719B located right at the door of the embankment's drainage sluice, plus rising sea water penetrates into the interior and pulls sand out, thereby causing the erosion and landslides.

In the area of Quarter 1, Ham Tien ward, Phan Thiet city, the beach has strongly eroded at the Blue Sea Tourist Area (from 5m-7m to the inland, 200m length), collapsing the reinforced concrete sluice gate No. 3 of the project about 10m and there is a risk of sinking deeper into the sewer.

Currently, the People's Committee of Tan Thanh Commune has barricaded and placed warning ropes to warn people of the danger of the collapsed area so that people know, do not enter, and avoid danger. At the Blue Sea Tourist Area, the business owner (Blue Sea Co., Ltd.) is mobilizing staff, using sandbags, excavators to rake the sand, spread canvas and dismantle the roof and floor of the food service area due to loss of soil, footfall of pillars. The People's Committee of Phan Thiet city has directed the People's Committee of Ham Tien ward to regularly inspect and review landslide areas, report the situation when landslides occur strongly, endangering property, people and tourists, limiting land loss, property damage and loss of coastal beaches.
