The Lunar New Year of the Cat fell in January 2023, so people's shopping needs
had increased, pushing up the prices of goods and services according to the
consumption rules; the increase in domestic gasoline prices in line with world
fuel prices and the adjustment of environmental protection tax rates from
January 1, 2023 were the main factors that caused the consumer price index
(CPI) to increase in January 2023 compared with the previous month.
According
to the Provincial Statistics Office, CPI January 2023 increased by 0.78% over
the previous month, 4.62% higher than the same period last year. Compared to
the previous month, in 11 major consumer goods and services groups, most of the
commodity groups increased in price, specifically: Transportation had the
highest increase with 1.76%, due to the increase in gasoline prices adjusted on
January 1, 2023, January 3, 2023 and January 11, 2023 according to world fuel
prices and added the environmental protection tax rate for gasoline, oil and
grease as prescribed in Resolution No. 30/2022/UBTVQH15 dated December 30, 2022
of the National Assembly Standing Committee, applied from January 1, 2023 to
the end of December 31, 2023, which increased gasoline prices by 2.31%, of
which A95 gasoline price increased 1,450 VND/liter, E5 gasoline price increased
1,380 VND/liter.
Garment,
hats and footwear increased by 1.18%; Beverages and tobacco increased by 1.13%;
Food and food services increased by 0.97%; Appliances and household appliances
increased by 0.91%; Other goods and services increased by 0.56%; Culture,
entertainment and tourism increased by 0.32%. Due to the high demand for
shopping and entertainment during the Lunar New Year, these groups of goods
increased in price in January 2023.
The
group of housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials increased
by 0.24% due to the increase in the demand for electricity for heating when the
weather turned cold as well as the increase in the demand for house repair and
maintenance during the Lunar New Year.
Medicines
and medical services; Education; Post and telecommunications are the groups
with low growth rate, 0.03%, 0.03%, and 0.01%, respectively.
