Forum on “Finding solutions for the sustainable development of Vietnam's dragon fruit industry”

(binhthuan.gov.vn) In the afternoon of 22/9/2023, the Provincial
People's Committee (PPC) coordinated with the Gardening Association and the
Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association to organize the Forum on "Finding
solutions for the sustainable development of Vietnam's dragon fruit
industry". The forum was chaired by Mr. Phan Van Tan - Deputy Director of
the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Nguyen Duy
Luong - Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Gardening Association; Nguyen Thanh Binh -
Chairman of Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association. There were also delegates
representing for several central agencies, departments, branches, and
localities involved and several cooperatives, farms, and enterprises producing,
processing, and exporting dragon fruits in the province.

Speaking at the forum, Mr. Phan Van Tan - Deputy Director of the
Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that Binh Thuan
has many advantages for agricultural development, especially with favorable
weather and soil conditions. Therefore, the province has the highest dragon
fruit area and output in the country. Currently, Binh Thuan has about 28,000
hectares with an output of over 550,000 tons/year. Dragon fruit trees have
brought economic efficiency and high income to farmers in the province recently.
At the forum, experts, scientists, managers and businesses focused
on discussing and proposing solutions to overcome difficulties for the Binh
Thuan dragon fruit industry in particular and Vietnam in general, aiming for sustainable
development of dragon fruit trees in the coming time. In particular, it is
emphasized on not to expand the area of newly planted dragon fruit, but to
increase propaganda to guide people on improving farming techniques in the
direction of GAP to ensure food safety and regulations of the import market; negotiate
protocols on plant quarantine with China to create favorable conditions for
dragon fruits to clear customs at border gates and seaports into this country's
market; bringing dragon fruit into the national key product group to build strategy
for a sustainable development industry; call for large corporations to invest
in the field of production and processing of products from fresh dragon fruit
to serve as a leading base to lead, orient and develop the local advantageous
agricultural product consumption market.
