Fraud warning in scanning QR codes

(binhthuan.gov.vn) People need to be careful when scanning QR codes, especially those QR codes posted or shared in public places, or sent via social networks or email.

Currently, the demand for using QR codes is increasing rapidly. According to the Payment Department (State Bank of Vietnam), QR codes have a strong growth rate in both quantity and value. In 2022, payments via QR codes increase by 225.36% in quantity and 243.92% in value compared to 2021.

Due to the convenience of this form of payment, QR code fraud has been recorded to increase sharply in the world and in Vietnam. In early August 2023, a number of banks in Vietnam issued warnings on credit card fraud through QR codes. The warning said, after making friends via social networks to communicate with the victim, the scammer will send a QR code for the user to scan. This code leads to fake bank websites, which require users to enter their full name, citizen identification number, account, secret code or OTP. From there, the user's account is taken over.

Compared to traditional malicious links, QR codes have the advantage of being able to be inserted directly into emails and messages without being blocked by filters, thereby easily reaching users.

Therefore, people need to be careful when scanning QR codes, especially those QR codes posted or shared in public places, or sent via social networks or email; identifying and carefully checking the account information of the person exchanging the QR codes; carefully reviewing the website content that the QR code takes to.

At the same time, people need to check the link to find whether it starts with https and is a familiar domain name. Absolutely not to provide personal information such as bank login accounts, social network accounts... It is needed to use a password manager, 2-factors authentication and other protection methods for accounts...

In addition, for units and organizations that provide QR codes in activities, it is also necessary to pay attention: giving warns and propagation to users, as banks recently warned their customers; providing solutions to verify transactions with unusual signs; regularly checking the QR codes posted at the supply location./.
