The Binh Thuan Water Resources Exploitation Limited Company has announced that
it plans to increase the water discharge rate through the spillway of Sông Quao
and Sông Khán reservoirs in Hàm Thuận Bắc District after 2 PM on October 17,
2024.
According to The
Binh Thuan Water Resources Exploitation Limited Company, heavy rain in the upstream
areas of Sông Quao and Sông Khán on the evening of October 16 led to a
significant inflow of water into the reservoirs. At 6 PM on October 16, the
inflow rate to Sông Quao reached 477.69 m³/s, while the discharge rate through
the spillway was 102.99 m³/s. By 7 PM that day, the water level in Sông Quao
was at +89.87m and continued to rise, nearing the normal flood level of
+90.17m. Meanwhile, at Sông Khán, at 5:30 PM the same day, the inflow rate
reached 184.35 m³/s, with a discharge rate through the spillway of 19.02 m³/s.
By 7 PM, the water level in Sông Khán was at +108.05m, exceeding the enhanced
flood level by 0.2m and still continuing to rise.
According to
forecasts from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, heavy
rain is expected to continue in the province over the coming days. Therefore,
after 3 PM on October 17, depending on the inflow to the reservoirs, The Binh
Thuan Water Resources Exploitation Limited Company will increase the water
discharge rate through the spillway of Sông Quao to between 150 and 200 m³/s to
ensure the safety of the structures and reduce flooding in downstream areas
during heavy rainfall. Similarly, the discharge rate through the spillway of
Sông Khán will be increased to between 20 and 35 m³/s for the safety and flood
reduction purposes.
To prevent
potential damage, the company recommends that the People's Committee of Hàm Thuận
Bắc District and the People's Committee of Phan Thiết City to inform localities
and residents along the flood discharge routes of Sông Khán and Sông Quao. Residents
should take proactive safety measures, especially in the communes and towns of
Thuận Hòa, Hàm Trí, Ma Lâm, Hàm Chính, Hàm Đức, Hàm Thắng, Phú Long, and Phú
Hài.
It is reported
that due to the heavy rain combined with flood discharge, widespread flooding
occurred in Hàm Thuận Bắc District yesterday (October 16), affecting homes,
transportation, and crops. Immediately on the night of October 16, local
authorities and relevant forces began implementing measures to prevent and
mitigate the consequences of the flooding.
