La Gi focuses on implementing solutions against IUU fishing

(binhthuan.gov.vn) Recently, the situation of fishing vessels and fishermen illegally fishing in foreign waters has sharply decreased in many localities in the province. However, La Gi town is still a hot spot with complicated developments and high risks; only in 02 years 2021 and 2022, La Gi recorded 04 cases/05 ships/32 fishermen violating foreign waters which were arrested and handled. In addition, the Fisheries Sub-Department also said that at the end of the year (before the Lunar New Year), the fishing fleet of La Gi town often moves to the fishing grounds in the Southeast of the East Sea, where borders to Malaysian waters, so there is a high risk of violating foreign waters.

Therefore, in order to prevent fishing vessels and fishermen from illegally fishing in foreign waters, especially vessels engaged in offshore fishing, the Provincial Steering Committee on IUU fishing Prevention has proposed the People's Committee of La Gi town to coordinate with associations and unions to propagate all ship owners, captains and fishermen of offshore fishing vessels, especially the offshore fishing to strictly observe the law provisions, not to violate the IUU fishing regulations in foreign waters.

Commune People's Committees shall review and update cases of fishing vessels in La Gi town that are operating, staying outside the province till now, preparing lists for special monitoring, and providing information to the Provincial Border Guard Command, Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development to notify functional agencies of other provinces to coordinate in control, timely prevent and handle when there are signs of sending fishing vessels and fishermen to exploit the foreign waters. Installing cruise monitoring devices on 100% of fishing vessels with a length of 15 meters or more in the area, and urgently guiding fishing vessel owners whose have installed cruise monitoring devices to compile a dossier of request for support as prescribed by laws.
