Strengthening prevention of monkeypox

(binhthuan.gov.vn) On October 3, 2022, the Ministry of Health received a report from the Department of Health of Ho Chi Minh City on the results of genetic sequencing test confirmed that a patient had Monkeypox virus strain of clade IIb. This is the first case of Monkeypox recorded in Vietnam.

In order to continue to actively prevent and control the monkeypox epidemic, the Department of Health requests all units:

To continue to implement strictly the directives of the Government, the Prime Minister and the instructions of the Ministry of Health on the prevention and control of monkeypox; review and ensure sufficient medicines, medical supplies, equipment and human resources to prepare for epidemic prevention and treatment and to provide medical examination and treatment for people in the area.

The Provincial Centers for Disease Control, Health Center of districts, towns and cities shall urgently organize training for staffs to investigate and monitor epidemics according to Decision No. 2265 /QD-BYT dated August 22, 2022 of the Ministry of Health; review, consolidate and strengthen the epidemic prevention and control forces ready for the event of an epidemic.

The following actions should be taken as soon as an infected case is detected: Expeditiously conduct a thorough investigation of all exposures to the Monkeypox positive case to identify the source of infection; timely manage and handle the outbreak to prevent the epidemic from spreading to the community. Taking isolation and treatment of positive cases, preventing cross-infection and infection to medical staffs during treatment. As detected any suspected case of the disease, the medical examination and treatment facilities should immediately report to the Provincial Center for Disease Control and the District Health Center to coordinate in investigating and handling epidemic prevention and control measures and taking samples to Pasteur Institute Nha Trang for diagnosis and identification of cases.

In case there is a person infected or suspected at the place of residence or work, it is necessary to notify the health agency for timely advice and treatment, do not take any self-treatment. People traveling to countries with monkeypox endemic (Central and West Africa), should avoid contact with mammals (dead or alive) such as rodents, marsupials, primates that may have monkeypox virus. After returning to Vietnam, it is necessary to proactively declare to the local health agency for advice. It is also needed to ensure food safety, practice healthy lifestyle, increase physical activity to improve health.
