In 2024, especially in the last 2
months, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recorded an unusually high
increase in the number of cases of Monkeypox (mpox) in the Democratic Republic
of the Congo. From the beginning of the year, this country has recorded about
15,600 cases, including over 537 deaths; Mpox virus clade Ib (Clade Ib) is the
dominant clade of the epidemic in this country. Initially, it was noted that
there are some epidemiological characteristics of the disease that are
different from the epidemiological characteristics of the previous epidemic
that occurred in 2022-2024 in Euro and some other countries such as younger
cases (about 50% under 15 years old, about 39% under 5 years old), with
transmission through female prostitutes (7.5%) and infection among household
members. In addition, four countries bordering the Democratic
Republic of the Congo (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda) have for the first
time recorded cases of mpox with epidemiological factors related to the mpox
epidemic occurring in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Two other countries
outside Africa (Sweden and Pakistan) also recorded cases of mpox – clade Ib.
Faced with the developments of this mpox epidemic and the risk of spreading to
other countries, WHO announced the public health emergency of international concern
(PHEIC) for the mpox epidemic on August 14, 2024.
In order to proactively monitor and
early detect domestic and invasive cases of mpox disease, promptly control the
epidemic to prevent a large-scale outbreak and minimize the number of
infections and deaths, the Ministry of Health requests the People's Committees
of the provinces, the centrally run cities to direct departments, agencies and
units to continue to strictly implement the directions of the Government and
the Prime Minister in Official Telegram No. 680/CD-TTg dated August 1, 2022 of
the Prime Minister on strengthening monkeypox prevention and control and
guidelines for monitoring, preventing and controlling monkeypox; diagnosis and
treatment of monkeypox; preventing infection in monkeypox examination and
treatment facilities of the Ministry of Health.
