The
poisonous mushroom Gyrommitrin lives on cicadas, has a shape similar to
cordyceps. There have been many cases of poisoning after eating this poisonous
mushroom.
Recently, a 34-year-old male patient in Tan Ha commune
(Duc Linh) was hospitalized after eating mushrooms. Specifically, the patient cooked
about 13-15 mushroom that looked like cordyceps at a garden in Duc Tai commune.
After eating, the patient was still normal, but at 12 o'clock on May 22, 2023,
the patient showed signs of vomiting, abdominal cramps, and then his family
members took him to the Southern General Hospital for emergency treatment. The
patient was then transferred to Cho Ray Hospital. The patient still has a
mental disorder and is being treated at Cho Ray Hospital.
A few years ago, the Emergency Department of Cho Ray
Hospital also received emergency care for two patients due to eating the above
mushroom. A couple of husband and wife found horned mushrooms in the cordyceps
variety, so they picked 21 mushrooms and cooked 11 mushrooms. However, a few
hours after eating, the couple showed signs of fatigue, blurred vision, and
weak limbs. After emergency treatment at Southern Regional General Hospital,
the patient was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital. After the treatment period,
both husband and wife recovered and were discharged from the hospital.
Through media channels, many suspected cases of
poisoning from eating horned cicada mushrooms were recorded in some provinces
and cities and there were cases of death. Because this fungus is in the
cordyceps variety, people are confused, if ingested, it will cause harm to
health and life.
It is known that the summer comes, sometimes heavy
rains appear, which is also the time cicadas active. The poisonous mushroom
Gyrommitrin lives on parasitically on adult cicadas, cicada carcasses or
cicadas that cannot molt... develop, sprout from cicada carcasses, cicada
larvae emerge from the ground where there is loose soil, high humidity; it has
a similar growth cycle to cordyceps.
The poisonous mushroom Gyrommitrin is shaped like a
red velvet horn. Toxins in mushrooms are not destroyed during preliminary
processing, cooking at boiling temperature. Many people confuse this poisonous
mushroom as cordyceps. This partly explains the reason for hospitalization,
even death after eating cicada parasitic fungus. Some people in Tanh Linh and
Duc Linh said that in the rainy season, they sometimes see this fungus when
working in the fields.
Mr. Tran Minh Tuan
- Chairman of Binh Thuan Provincial Oriental Medicine Association said that
currently, the cordyceps are sold floating in the market quite a lot. Users
should buy at a reputable unit that is certified for the product, should not
eat mushrooms in nature and mushrooms of unknown origin to avoid unfortunate
poisoning cases.
Mr. Tuan also warns that Gyrommitrin is an extremely
toxic mushroom that endangers the health and life of people if eaten./.
